The Zone first night

The following comprised the first films shown at the Zone.

Part 1 - Abstract

Light Being - Ben Baker Smith, Evan Kühl (2010, 8')
light being is the 8th track off Vaudeo Signal, an album of sound and light by Ben Baker-Smith and Evan Kühl. Vaudeo Signal  approaches analog signals as raw materials, generated and mixed within closed feedback systems. It embraces the fundamental attributes of its hardware, and in doing so is intimately tied to the medium in which it was created.

Mobile Home - Ian Helliwell (2009, 3'45")
Found standard 8 home movie film that has been shot using a 16mm camera, to give a natural flicker effect when run through an 8mm projector. The original film was slit in half to form the two parts of the split screen, and superimposed for the middle section. Soundtrack: Hellitron 18.

Filmosounds - Ian Helliwell (2001, 4'45")
An experimental film and video combination originating from found 16mm footage cut into short sequences, and spliced together to form an audio collage. This was then fed into a modified TV test pattern generator to give a synchronised visual representation, in the form of blue horizontal bands of varying density.

Unfamiliar Environment - John Hiom (2010, 3'36")
Super 8 abstract film of dancing lights on a dark background, suggestive maybe of water or of falling. The film was made by painting, working into, and adapting found footage. The soundtrack is made from specially designed and built sound generators.

Part 2 - Dance in film
The Mouse Escapes - Simon Mclennan (2008, 11')
A 16mm film containing butoh dance sequences.  A scientist working in quantum theory and genetics, questions his work and experiences strange visions. The dancer's costume was designed and made for the forest sequence. The soundtrack was specially written for the film, and recorded by string quartet.

Kamikaze - Carolina Diaz (2008, 7')
Influenced by Butoh and expressionist dance, Kamikaze shows a dream-like psychological landscape, populated by surrealist imagery and haunting sounds. It is a search around the principles of 'impermanence' and 'fixation', and also on the relationships between body, image, sound, light/darkness and costume.
A Night With L / All Circus - Linda Remahl  (2010,  8')
Two dance films in which the editing has become a strong element within the choreography.
Filmed, choreographed and edited by Linda Remahl.

Part 3 - Poetic

Chinampas - David Grundy (2010, 5'4")
A poem spoken by Cecil Taylor rendered as text on video.

The Lost French Horn Player - Michael Szpakowski (2010, 2'9")
A film that forms part of a video diary, an ongoing project by Michael Szpakowski
The voice is from a numbers station. The female image is on a somewhat battered bath foam bottle. The horn player is lost. Music by Michael Szpakowski.

Park House - Simon Mclennan (2010, 2'37")
B&W and colour Super 8 film shot in London and Cumbria, re-edited randomly with a soundtrack of spoken word and manipulated sound.
Question Answer - Lorenza Ippolito (2010, 10')
A comment on objectified nostalgia. Part of a longer film shown originally as an installation as part of the group art show "It's All About Paradise 2"  www.itsallaboutparadise2.com

Act Of Love - Mark Whiteford- Film with live music and dance performance (Vv-dance, David Grundy-sound, Mark Whiteford- sound) (1987-, 45')
A super 8 movie from another time. The movie was shot over several years as part of the Act of Love performance project. "The film is extremely empty and non varying and non dynamic."  Actually the film is extremely varying, dynamic and only empty in the sense of it does not seem to aim to excite, in any of the usual filmic senses.
